Welcome to my blog! I’m Daughter of Maat! My real name is Melissa, and I’m a 35 year old wife and mom to a six year old little girl. I spent 17 years as an ophthalmic technician, but about two years ago, I took a sabbatical from my career. I just couldn’t deal with the office politics anymore. I was completely burned out.
My husband, Greg, went to work, and I started homeschooling our daughter, Sam. Unfortunately, we took a huge paycut when I quit my job, so I decided to try my hand at working from home. But I had no idea where to start.
I did some research and decided that I’d become a freelance writer. Still having no idea what I was doing, I signed up for Hubpages under the pseudonym Daughter of Maat. I wrote and published my first article there in January of 2012. Between January and July, I started three other blogs including:
- Vegan Harvest which is about our life as a vegan family, and the trials and tribulations of dealing with a child who doesn’t necessarily want to be vegan.
- Karmic Education which is about our homeschooling program and how we teach our daughter about our pagan beliefs.
- My Kinect Weight Loss Success Story which details my weight loss journey and how I lost 70lbs using the Xbox 360 Kinect.
Things went well for a few months and then in July 2012, Greg was injured on the job and our life was turned upside down. The only income we had was my writing, and since I was just getting started, it was only about $300 a month.
In August 2012, I was accepted to the Hubpages Apprenticeship Program. At the same time, I started this blog in the hopes of bringing in more income (although I didn’t realize that I couldn’t monetize the blog on wordpress.com). I originally called the blog Writings by Daughter of Maat, but I didn’t do much with it because I had taken on so many other writing obligations in an effort to pay the bills.
We ended up in a legal battle over workman’s compensation, and also had to appeal unemployment. We went four months without any income except my writing, but we somehow managed to get through it. In February 2013, we were able to pay off most of our bills with Greg’s settlement, and our tax refund. Things started to look up.
Despite the stress, I found I thoroughly enjoyed writing for Hubpages as well as blogging, but this blog didn’t really have a purpose. In January 2013, I changed its name to Mommy Writings by Daughter of Maat as well as its direction. I decided I wanted to help other moms who might be just starting out on their journey as an entrepreneur, but have no idea where to start. I also wanted to help inspire moms who might be going through a similar situation to my own financially. You can get through the tough times, but it takes determination.
So this blog isn’t just about starting a business, there are plenty of blogs out there on how to start an online business. There are just as many on how to get started with your own blog. Mommy Writings specifically details my journey as a work-at-home mom and blogger and what I have learned since I started over a year ago. But, I also talk about regular life. I’m a mom first, and business owner second, so you’ll be reading a lot about our day to day life and sharing in our successes (and our failures).
In March 2013, I’ll be moving this blog to its own host, which will allow me to monetize with ads and sponsors to (hopefully) bring in a monthly income. Greg still needs surgery, and unemployment only lasts so long.
Feel free to follow me on any of the social networks or email me by using the cute little buttons on the right hand side of the page. You can also follow my blog with Bloglovin’. Don’t be afraid to leave a comment either. I love hearing from my readers!!
